The impact of economic sanctions on health and treatment costs of urban households: a difference-in-difference approach

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of economic sanctions on urban household expenditures in the health sector. In this study, the statistical information collected from the household budget of Tehran city in the period of 1390-1401 and the difference-in-difference regression method were used. Economic sanctions, in the first stage, lead to a decrease in the import of health and pharmaceutical products, and as a result, citizens' access to these basic goods decreases, which affects the vulnerable population, especially women, children, and the elderly. It affects The results obtained from this study indicate that economic sanctions have led to a decrease in the share of health and treatment expenses in the household budget. The results obtained from the difference in the estimated difference model indicate that in terms of the virtual variable of sanctions and also the target households, the net effect of the economic sanctions through a reduction in the purchasing power of households has led to a decrease in the share of the budget related to the cost of healthcare for households.
